Winner of the German Agency Award 2022

Winner in the category "B2C / Book" for the anniversary book of the DTV Deutscher Tennisverein Hannovers

The Project: The anniversary book of the DTV Hannover for its 125th anniversary

The German Tennis Club (DTV) Hannover - a long-standing client of DRIVE - celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2021.

For this occasion, DRIVE conceived, developed, and designed, in collaboration with DTV Hannover, a high-quality anniversary book befitting the occasion. This included meticulous photo selection, as well as planning, textual, and graphic design.

Through the book, readers are meant to learn about the club and its development since its founding in 1896, including its historical milestones, or reminisce. It was important to us not to present a classical, boring list of key dates, but to build a narrative arc from the founding through two world wars to the present, focusing on intriguing historical figures and defining events. The book should be uniquely designed both inside and out - because only then can it do justice to DTV Hannover.

The client

The DTV Hannover is one of the largest and most well-known tennis clubs in Germany, as well as the largest in the Tennis Association of Lower Saxony-Bremen. In addition to tennis and hockey departments, there is a fitness center and a range of wellness and fitness courses available. The DTV prides itself on being an extremely family-friendly club that invests heavily in youth work. Founded in 1896, the club has continued to grow and has played a particularly special role in Hannover and nationwide for many decades. This applies to both the sporting and social aspects. For example, after World War II, the successful initiative to revive tennis in Germany came from the then DTV president Richard Stephanus and the unforgettable tennis baron Gottfried von Cramm.

Special Features

High-quality and creatively designed pages, fantastic historical and current imagery serve as the eye-catchers of this book. DRIVE had access to a large photo collection that accurately documented the history of the club. The partially historical images were scanned in such a way that the patina reflects the respective era vividly within the framework of modern book design. These images provide a striking contrast to the vibrant current images of the present sequences.

DTV Over the Decades...

The book was divided into chapters according to decades. Each chapter highlights successful players as well as personalities and events that shaped and influenced the club. This included the intellectual leader of the reconstruction as well as the Senior World Championship of Tennis Seniors - an unforgettable event to this day. Textual sources included, among others, the anniversary publications of the 5th and 100th anniversaries, which were transformed into short stories and placed in the historical context. Interviews and portraits of sporting stars of the club round out the narrative arc.

The Cover

The cover of the book deserves special mention. To ensure a unique and authentic reader experience, the cover was designed to resemble a real tennis court. This includes the color and texture, but especially the tactile feel of the book. The surface representing the tennis court has been specially treated to give it a sandy texture. Anyone who has stood on a tennis court and felt its rough surface will immediately notice the parallels between the anniversary book and the tennis court!
