TYPO3 10.4 LTS Release

TYPO3 v10 LTS Release

TYPO3 v10 LTS is here! Find out more about the new features here. It's worth it!

TYPO3 is one of the most widely used content management systems (CMS) in the world. The reasons for this are clear: high security, enormous versatility, and speed. Each new version undergoes extensive development, becoming more efficient, more user-friendly, and easier to work with, even for new users. Following various “sprint releases” (preparations for the comprehensive update) since July 2019, the big day has finally arrived: TYPO3 v10.4 is being released as a long-term support (LTS) version on April 21, 2020.

What does this mean in practice?

The oldest TYPO3 versions are no longer supported and have major security vulnerabilities. If your website is still running on TYPO3 v6, for example, necessary security updates have not even been guaranteed since April 2020. Or only the most necessary security updates are carried out, as is the case with v7 and v8. However, the most necessary updates no longer deter hackers. TYPO3 v9 still receives bug fixes that are a high priority for general website security. This will end in the third quarter of 2021. Here you can see the current status of TYPO3 support:

What's new in TYPO3 v10?

It's time to clean up! Innovations are secondary; optimizing and improving the functions of the solid v9 are the priority. The software is being streamlined, outdated and incompatible elements are being removed, and any extensions are being incorporated into the TYPO3 core. Page navigation is becoming more intuitive, existing modules are more user-friendly thanks to upgrades, and APIs have been stabilized.

The dashboard is eagerly awaited. Backend users now have a quick overview of important system information and status. The standard widgets show TYPO3 news and a tutorial, among other things. In keeping with the TYPO3 philosophy, developers can create their own widgets, and backend users can configure multiple dashboards and add, delete, and arrange widgets.

Managing backend users now offers a new detailed view for administrators. The view shows the actual name, email address, start and stop dates, as well as all “groups, subgroups, permissions, DB and file attachments, permitted page types, read/write access to tables, etc.”

The database connection is always important. v10 LTS has greater backward compatibility and has been tested for compatibility with version 5.5 or higher. As before, DRIVE can also connect to other database systems, such as MariaDB.

Many other system enhancements have been improved:

  • Form Management now allows you to navigate back and forth,
  • accessibility has been improved by allowing you to navigate through the page tree using the keyboard
  • The Link Validator detects broken links and has been further improved to now also detect pages, files, and external links.
  • TYPO3 v10 supports PHP version 7.4 and Symfony 5.0 for the first time
  • When uploading files, you can now rename, replace, or cancel existing files with the same name.

Update yes or no?

The need for action is clear: if you don't want your website to have security vulnerabilities or if you don't want older extensions and functions on your website to stop working, it is highly recommended that you update your website to TYPO3 version 10.4. We would be happy to discuss with you in detail whether this is already relevant for your version.
