SEO and GEO: one shared philosophy for greater visibility

Creating content for a website today means more than simply publishing information and waiting for someone to find it. Search engines and new AI tools need to be able to find, understand and put content into the right context.

This is where two increasingly connected concepts come into play: SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). SEO aims to improve the visibility of a page in search engines such as Google or Bing. GEO takes this a step further: content should also be understandable and discoverable by AI systems and usable when generating answers.

These are not two opposing strategies. Both are based on the same fundamental principles: useful, clear, accessible, relevant and trustworthy content.

From Keywords to Questions

Keywords are still an important part of SEO. On their own, however, they do not show what someone actually needs when they perform a search.

For example, someone looking for information about a specific product might be looking for a definition, comparing different technologies or trying to solve a specific application problem.

For one customer of us we created a good example of this approach. Its product pages do more than simply describe the products. They also explain what they are, which problems they solve, what applications they are suitable for and what technical documentation is available.

This context makes the content more useful to people while also making it easier for search engines and AI systems to understand.

What Makes Content More Visible and Understandable?

Not every piece of content on a website has to be a product page. Blogs, news articles, technical articles, and FAQs can answer new questions, impart knowledge, and showcase your expertise in a specific area.

For one of our clients, for example, we combine product pages with content on trends, news, and technical know-how. This integration provides additional context surrounding technologies and markets.

The way information is presented also plays a role. A clear structure, meaningful headings, understandable links, alt text for images, and accessible content help people, search engines, and AI systems alike to better understand a page.

In other words: A website that is easy for people to understand can also be more easily understood by the technologies that find and analyze its content.

SEO and GEO: One Shared Philosophy

SEO and GEO go hand in hand today. The fundamentals of SEO remain important to ensure that a page can be found and indexed. GEO adds another dimension to these fundamentals: presenting content in a way that allows AI systems to understand and use it.

  • So how should we think about content?
Perhaps it is less about which keyword we want to rank for and more about which question we want to answer and what value we can provide.
  • The most important idea is simple:
Don't optimize only for a keyword. Create the best possible answer to the question your audience is trying to solve.

SEO helps make that answer discoverable. GEO helps ensure that it can be understood, retrieved and cited in the new generation of AI-powered search experiences.

Want to take your online visibility to the next level?

Search is changing. Alongside traditional search engines, AI-powered systems are becoming increasingly important when people look for information, products and solutions. If you want to stay visible in the long term, your content needs to be not only discoverable, but also understandable.
