Digital accessibility is an increasingly important criterion in evaluating the quality of websites. The aim is to enable people with disabilities to use a website without encountering any problems. This is not the case for the vast majority of websites.
Only 2.6% of homepages are accessible
The new WebAIM report “The WebAIM Million - An annual accessibility analysis of the top 1,000,000 home pages” dated April 30, 2021 shows that only a small proportion of the homepages (tested here in a large sample) can actually be used without problems. In fact, 51.4 elements per tested homepage are faulty in terms of accessibility.

What are the most common problems?
The most common accessibility issues on the websites audited are:
- Insufficient contrast
- Missing alternative text
- Missing labels for input fields
- Empty links
- Missing document language
- Unlabeled buttons
These results are only marginally better than last year's results. However, these issues and many others can be avoided!
Why is digital accessibility important?
Digital accessibility greatly expands the user base of your website or other digital offerings. People with all kinds of disabilities can use, recognize, and understand your offerings. Digital accessibility is mandatory for all public authorities across the EU under this directive. But online shops, the healthcare industry, and the food sector should also implement digital accessibility. After all, a positive user experience should not be underestimated!
