Unleashing the power of TYPO3 v13.0

An insight into the first sprint release

The eagerly awaited TYPO3 version 13.0 has arrived on the digital landscape, marking the beginning of a transformative journey towards a long-term support release scheduled for October 2024. This first sprint release is a testament to the TYPO3 community's commitment to innovation and excellence in web content management.

A standout feature of TYPO3 v13.0 is the introduction of the new Site Handling feature. This powerful feature allows users to effortlessly manage multiple websites within a single TYPO3 instance. Whether you are a small business with different offerings or a large enterprise managing a portfolio of brands, Site Handling streamlines the process and provides a unified and intuitive interface.

Another notable new feature in this version is the improved image processing pipeline. TYPO3 v13.0 now supports WebP, an efficient image format that ensures faster loading times and improved user experience. The image processing pipeline also includes intelligent algorithms for resizing and optimizing images, allowing content creators to build visually stunning websites without compromising performance.

The upcoming TYPO3 v13 release promises to reduce setup time for new websites through the use of frontend presets and the provision of new options for creating custom content types. New APIs are being introduced to increase the productivity of power users.

The most important new features in TYPO3 v13.0:

  1. Rechts-nach-links Backend UIRight-to-left backend UI
Right-to-left (RTL) support makes TYPO3 even more accessible for languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, Kurdish, and Persian. The backend now fully supports RTL text alignment for layout, content areas, tables, and menus.
  2. Optional backend modules
Admin Tools and the Extension Manager are now decoupled from the TYPO3 core. Users can optionally retain these features for Composer-based installations, which increases security and reduces the attack surface.
  3. Consistent backend access point
TYPO3 v13.0 removes dedicated URIs such as “/typo3/”. All requests, both for the frontend and the backend, now run through a single access point, which allows for customization of the backend URIs.
  4. Search function in the form framework
A new search field in the Form Manager makes it easier for backend users to find forms.
  5. Password recovery email
The “felogin” system extension offers advanced customization options for password recovery emails.
  6. Keyboard shortcuts in TYPO3 backend modules
Developers can now register custom keyboard shortcuts in the TYPO3 backend, improving daily workflows.

The technical side: System requirements and maintenance

TYPO3 v13.0 has minimal system requirements and lays the foundation for planned enhancements in upcoming sprint releases. It is important to support PHP 8.2 and update to Doctrine DBAL v4.

The LTS release is expected on October 15, 2024, and priority bug fixes will be carried out until October 31, 2027.

Conclusion

TYPO3 v13.0 marks a significant step forward toward an even more accessible, secure, and user-friendly TYPO3. Stay tuned for more exciting updates, because TYPO3 continues to evolve and redefine the world of web development.

We strongly recommend updating older versions, especially v11 and older. V11 will remain stable until 2024, but plan to update at the end of this year or early next year.
